Overthinking can make one small thought feel like a full-blown emergency.
Your brain starts asking What if? What if? What if? and suddenly you’re planning conversations that haven’t happened, worrying about things you can’t control, and mentally solving problems that may not even exist.
When that happens, don’t try to think your way out of overthinking. Come back to your body first.
Start small:
- Feel your feet on the ground.
- Unclench your jaw.
- Drop your shoulders.
- Relax your tongue.
- Take one slow exhale.
- Look around and name five things you can see.
- Notice three sounds.
- Feel your breath.
- Put a hand on your chest and ask, “Am I safe right now?”
Then remind yourself:
A thought is not a fact.
You don’t need to know the future. You don’t need to have every answer right now. Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is simply pause.
Take three slow breaths. Let this moment be enough.
You are okay right now.
And most importantly, remember:
You are more than your thoughts.
